The
NIT is located at Silchar. It can be reached by boarding direct flight
from Kolkata or from Guwahati and one can also come by road or train
from Guwahati. The Institute is located on the Silchar-Hailakandi road
at a distance of about 8 kilometers from the Silchar city.National
Institute Of Technology Silchar (NIT Silchar) , an Institute of National
Importance under the NIT Act was established in 1967 as a Regional
Engineering College (REC), Silchar. NIT Silchar is situated on the banks
of river Barak. In the year 2002, it was upgraded to the status of an
NIT from a Regional Engineering College (REC).
The major facilities are:
- Computer Centre: The Institute computing facility includes high-end workstations and Intel Pentium based Personal Computers
- Workshops: The workshop of the Mechanical Engineering Department acts as a Central Workshop of the Institute. It has Machine, Wielding, Fitting, Carpentry, Smithy, pattern making and foundry shops
- Hospital providing medical facilities to the staff and students
- Post office with the facilities like registration, money order, and speed post
- Bank with ATM services
- Shopping centre with general provision stores, PCOs, Fax Centres, DTP centers, bookshop, etc.

Eligibility :
B.Tech : Admissions
to the first semester of all Undergraduate courses are made on the
basis of seats allocated by Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) from
the list of candidates selected by all India JEE (Main). Besides, a
specified number of foreign nationals/NRIs selected under the policy
laid down by Govt. of India, are admitted directly to the 1st year of
the courses.
M.Tech : The
courses leading to M.Tech.degree are open to candidates who have
obtained the requisite qualification with 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA in
aggregate in the qualifying examination. Statutory relaxation in the
eligibility criterion is provided to candidates belonging to SC/ST
communities. Admission for the GATE qualified candidates is made through
Common Admission Process called Central Counselling for
M.Tech./M.Plan/M.Arch (CCMT). When GATE qualified candidates are not
available, admission is done on the basis of merit as decided by the
Institute
M.Sc : Admission
to M.Sc. courses in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics are based on
career marking, written test and interview. Applicants must have secured
at least 50% marks or a CPI of 5.5 in aggregate at B.Sc. level and
preference is given to students having honours in the applied
discipline. Statutory relaxation in the minimum eligibility criterion is
provided to candidates belonging to SC/ST communities.
MBA : The
minimum eligibility criterion for admission to MBA is Bachelor degree
in any branch of engineering/science/humanities etc. with 50% marks or
5.5 CGPA and valid CAT/MAT/CMAT scores. Final selection is made on the
basis of Group Discussion and Personal Interview conducted at the
Institute.
Ph.D. : The
Ph.D. program is offered by all the departments. A candidate can apply
for admission in the prescribed form round the year. However, the
admission is offered twice in a year, during December-January and
July-August sessions only. After completing all requirements, the Board
of Governors of NIT Silchar awards the degree on recommendation of the
Senate.
